IoD South Wales First Wednesday Club

What? ‘This month we are hosting it in the Stock Exchange Room at Cardiff Business School (Postgraduate Teaching Centre). Our guest speaker will be Dr Woon Wong, Reader in Financial Economics, Cardiff Business School and attendees will be given an Introductory Bloomberg Session.

‘Attendees will be given the opportunity to use the application that CBS students are using in their studies which is in today’s open-source, fast-changing digital marketplace, it’s real-world experience that will best prepare students of business and finance for the world that waits. Cloistered and theoretical learning won’t confer an advantage when they compete in the job market — early immersion into the markets through the Bloomberg Terminal will.

What? Sherry Coutu CBE is a former CEO and angel investor who serves on the boards of companies, charities and universities. She chairs Founders4Schools and The ScaleUp Insitute and is a non-executive member of Cambridge University (Finance Board), Cambridge Assessment, Cambridge University Press and a NED of Zoopla and the London Stock Exchange Group. She also serves on the Advisory Board of Linkedin.com.

‘Philanthropically, she supports the Prince’s Trust, the Crick Institute and serves on the Harvard Business School European Advisory Council. Sherry has an MBA from Harvard, an MSc (with distinction) from the London School of Economics, and a BA (Hons with distinction) from the University of British Columbia, Canada. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to entrepreneurship in the New Year’s Honours List 2013, is author of ‘The Scale-up Report’ on UK economic growth and serves as an Ambassador for London.’

Cardiff Breakfast Club: Carole Anne Davies, Chief Exec of the Design Commission

What? ‘Carole-Anne Davies is Chief Executive of the Design Commission for Wales. Born in Brynmawr, she was educated at Brynmawr Comprehensive School and the Open University. She is a humanities graduate and passionate advocate of the value of culture and the arts in a variety of settings. A career predominantly in senior management roles followed her time in industry with Thorn EMI and she held roles as Director of Cardiff Bay Arts Trust; Trustee at Amgueddfa Cymru National Museum Wales and consultant to the Scottish Government. In 2015 she was appointed founding Chair of The Gregynog Trust.

‘Carole-Anne established a co-production business model at DCFW integrating the expertise of outstanding multi-disciplinary private sector professionals with that of the core staff team. She has worked with three chairs and six Ministers in succession, bringing significant expertise and influence to projects in Wales including proposals for Tidal Lagoon Power, BBC Cymru Wales headquarters, Cardiff Central Square, Hafod Eryri, St Fagans National Museum of History, major roads programme infrastructure, the development of Swansea City Centre and most recently ambitious proposals for Cyfarthfa and wider Merthyr Tydfil.

‘Carole-Anne is an alumna of the CSCLeaders Commonwealth International Study Conference, of Harvard Kennedy School Executive Programme and the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). She is a Fellow of the UWTSD, an Honorary Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Life Fellow of the Institute of Welsh Affairs and an active mentor specializing in equalities and leadership. She is a very, very keen gardener.’

What? ‘Sir John Kingman was appointed as Chairman of Legal & General Group plc from October 24, 2016.

‘John is also non-executive Chair of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), a new body established by the British Government to oversee the strategic direction of science and innovation funding in the UK, with a budget of over £6bn a year.

‘John has had a long Whitehall career; as Second Permanent Secretary to HM Treasury, he had responsibility for the Treasury’s economics ministry functions, for policy relating to business, financial services and infrastructure. He was closely involved in the UK response to the financial crisis, handling the resolution of Northern Rock and leading negotiations with RBS, Lloyds and HBOS on their £37bn recapitalisation. He was the first Chief Executive of UK Financial Investments Ltd (UKFI). From 2010-12, John was Global Co-Head of the Financial Institutions Group at Rothschild.

‘John is a Trustee of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, a Trustee of the National Gallery, a World Fellow of Yale University, a member of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and a member of the Global Advisory Board of the Centre for Corporate Reputation, Oxford University. He recently chaired the judges for the 2017 Wolfson Economics Prize, a £250,000 prize awarded for the best solution to a public policy problem.’
